Why are some people in denial about the gas they buy and motor oil they buy unless they can see the difference?

For non mechanics that can't see what better quality lubricants do some want proof by being able to watch it or see a difference.Why are some people in denial about the gas they buy and motor oil they buy unless they can see the difference?
Even mechanics can't tell the difference in motor oils as far as proof goes.My friend was like that until he went with a truck driver to get a load of gas and seen trucks from.Shell...BP..Exxon..Gulf..Sheets and a dozen more all get gas from the same tank.Why are some people in denial about the gas they buy and motor oil they buy unless they can see the difference?
